A happy 92nd birthday today, November 24, to Forrest J Ackerman.
Fifty years ago, editor Ackerman and publisher James Warren launched Famous Monsters of Filmland, the legendary magazine that stoked a love of monster movies in tens of thousands of readers, and encouraged many to careers as writers and filmmakers.
Here’s a fun Forry/Frankenstein connection: Ackerman introduces Paul Bunnell’s film That Little Monster in the manner of Edward Van Sloan’s warning at the start of the 1931 Frankenstein. Beautifully done!
Now, news comes from California that FJA is ailing, battling pneumonia with serenity and humor, and supported by a constant stream of friends and well-wishers, the people he worked with, those he introduced and glorified to his readers, and those he inspired.
Us Frankenstein fans from all over the world send our best wishes and our love to Forry.
The Classic Horror Film Board has a thread updating Ackerman’s condition, with contact information for those who wish to send thank you notes, get well cards and greetings.
Happy Birthday, Uncle Forry
