La Belle et la Bete was my childhood initiatory experience to the magic and mystery of fantastic films. They still play it every year on TV at christmastime, I never miss it. I have no children of my own, but I have introduced nieces and nephews to it.

I didn’t get to see A&CMF until I was all of 17. Mind you, I was lucky enough to see it in a revival theater, up on a big screen. Loved the movie, especially considering that 40 years ago, it was generally considered as the ignominious end for the Universal horrors. I though it was brilliant. I’ve seen it many times since, but it never had the revelatory power over me that Frank experienced, which makes his essay so fascinating to me. My first Frankenstein was the 1931 original, which I saw on TV when I was 6 years old, just as the Shock Theater era was kicking in.Pierre Fournierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16109698812799559366noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5112951555998191786.post-52929767465633193542008-03-26T14:52:00.000-04:002008-03-26T14:52:00.000-04:00I love Lugosi's hypnotic gesture (and Costello's r...I love Lugosi's hypnotic gesture (and Costello's reaction) too. Nostalgic articles like this one suggest that my childhood (and therefore my young imagination) was terribly deprived! I love the movie, of course, and have seen it many times but it's never been the Great Primal Discovery that it was for so many of my friends. By the time I saw it, I had already discovered Cocteau and Franju, which were Great Primal Discoveries and probably explains a lot about my particular horror orientations. I'm not a parent, but I did once have the pleasure of introducing A&CMF to a youngster and, yes, it's a big kick to bring it into someone's life. In fact, it's been such a rite of passage for so many people, you've got to wonder why it was a "death knell" for the classic monsters rather than a kickstart for a whole new kind of tongue-in-cheek monster movie. The later A&C meetings with Jekyll and Hyde, the Invisible Man and the Mummy didn't have the same appeal. They had the wrong co-stars, if you ask me. Anyway, congratulations to Frank on a fine piece of writing.Tim Lucashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01745651801885417165noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5112951555998191786.post-30792311245220802412008-03-20T11:18:00.000-04:002008-03-20T11:18:00.000-04:00If there's one film I've probably watched more tim...If there's one film I've probably watched more times than any other in my 40 years on Earth it's probably this one.Mr. Karswellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15889717828895556186noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5112951555998191786.post-72283111204490504102008-03-20T08:55:00.000-04:002008-03-20T08:55:00.000-04:00WOW! what a post.excellent all the way around, fra...WOW! what a post.

excellent all the way around, frank and pierre.rob!https://www.blogger.com/profile/17556471244882205031noreply@blogger.com
