Looking at the pictures, it appears he also removed that bridge (teeth) to make his face appear more sunken in on one side, like he did in the first Frankenstein movie... — Alan MartinAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14085844099017920895noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5112951555998191786.post-38589036475347815332013-07-27T04:55:06.803-04:002013-07-27T04:55:06.803-04:00Well... that explains neither point I raised above...Well... that explains neither point I raised above, the costume switch on Kaye-- an obvious continuity gaffe, indicating there was a chunk cut out of the movie-- and Kaye's over the top "scared" reaction to the real Karloff when he sees him.

It's possible that this is the explanation, but it sounds more likely that there was a Frankenstein daydream sequence and a day's passage of time in the story.

That would explain the costume gaffe as well as Kaye's reaction to the un-made-up Karloff the (presumed) next day. Plus, it would set up the kicker gag of Karloff posing as the Monster in the end.

The final gag, as described, could not have been more than a minute, maybe even thirty seconds. Trimming that would scarcely make a dent in such an overlong picture. However, if you cut out a six minute daydream AND the related coda, now you got something. -- Ted NewsomAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5112951555998191786.post-65372199578888520182012-11-26T18:02:42.991-05:002012-11-26T18:02:42.991-05:00A new book,"Danny Kaye: King of Jesters"...A new book,"Danny Kaye: King of Jesters" by David Koenig, describes the Frankenstein sequence in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." Koenig writes, "[Screenwriter Phil] Rapp suggested closing the picture"..."with a big gag, capitalizing on the casting of Boris Karloff as Dr. Hollingshead. At his new office, Walter would take Rosalind into the next room to show how the doctor's parole was working out--Karloff would be posing for the cover of Terror Stories, made up as the Frankenstein monster."

The assumption is that the sequence was filmed, because when discussing the overlong running time of the picture, Koenig writes that "the Frankenstein gag at the end always seemed awkward, so it was an easy cut."Dougnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5112951555998191786.post-72603880646473403862011-08-31T14:20:13.726-04:002011-08-31T14:20:13.726-04:00It's logical to assume the entire scene was sh...It's logical to assume the entire scene was shot and excised, along with a couple other Kaye daydreams. When you watch the film, there's a sequence in the publishing office where Kaye is dressed in one suit at the beginning, then magically changes suits in the rest of the scene, in which he sees the Karloff character for the first time and freaks out. That makes little sense (unless you assume it's an "Arsenic & Old Lace"/"Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome" attempt at an injok, "Oh, look it's Boris Karloff.") -- unless you know that there was an entire sequence featuring That Guy with That Face immediately preceding it.-- Ted NewsomAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5112951555998191786.post-34959939947128943722009-01-25T12:25:00.000-05:002009-01-25T12:25:00.000-05:00Really interesting!
