The Art of Frankenstein : Nicky Barkla

Australian artist Nicky Barkla creates bold, mixed media paintings, here using liquid acrylic and water color pencils. Her paintings of pop culture icons explode with vivid colors that swirl, mix and melt together in beautiful controlled accidents.

Titled “Everybody But Me”, Barkla’s powerful interpretation of Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein Monster is meant to evoque the crucial scene from Mary Shelley’s novel where The Monster confronts its creator, demanding a mate. Here, the Monster emerges from a star field that suggest the depth of its loneliness and the endless breadth of its aspirations.
